It's basically real-time voice chat instead of text messaging. That makes it very attractive to people who call long-distance, especially overseas, where international phone calls can be very expensive. Why pay around £1 per minute to chat with someone in Europe when you can talk for 20 minutes for free with Skype? Talk, listen, watch, read, and write to anyone, anywhere in the world without worrying about cost, distance or time.
